Hello, world. I stand on your precipice a just-out-of-college, book devouring, far too loud, wild gesticulator. In my hazy envisionings of what followed graduation back when I was but a wee sophomore, I had an image of someone who resembled me (only better, taller, and more capable), striding out into the world to Accomplish. What? Ahhh, that would take care of itself, I thought, safely ensconced in my dorm room.
Here is the real deal. Thanks to the bad economy (or what-have-you), nothing really took care of itself, even when helped along by what felt like dozens of resumes and cover letters, phone calls, interviews, etcetera. So I came home, back to my Beatrix Potter-festooned childhood room with its beige wallpaper and dog-eared teddy bears. No job, and no real plan except a vague panicky idea to apply to some kind of graduate program and gain all the skills I thought college was supposed to impart, therefore allowing me to survive on my own at some point in the (hopefully) near future. Goodbye, wild parties and professors. Hello, crickets, woods, and Mom's french toast.
This isn't an entirely bad exchange, saving the almost-easily-squashed twitchy feeling of sucking one's parents dry of funds, food, and energy. I enjoy being back in my home state, the events here that I missed away at school, and of course some quality time with the mom-u-lator before heading off into My Life (I seem to remember having one?)
Pros: Cats, dogs, birds, fish, food, parents, peace and quiet, sleep, Opportunities.
Cons: No friends, no classes, boredom, Responsibilities.
What do you do with a year "for yourself?" I have many of what I think of as "side dishes" to my life. My daily choices were mainly centered around school work, more school work, and school work at 3am. Now I have time for eating and sleeping, yes, but also learning to play the fiddle, singing, and maybe (if I'm feeling particularly daring) attacking the knitting in the dusty back recesses of my closet. It appears to have grown several body parts since I last paid attention to it. Yep, Little Ol' Cat Lady in Training.
Anyway, long term goals are to go to Library skool, and put my practical major in Medieval Studies (guffaw) to good use by taking care of aging manuscripts and documents. Honestly, this blog is being created out of sheer boredom at 1am, but also with the idea of seeing what one does for a year when one has nothing particularly serious to do.
Since a lot of what I like to do is read, this blog is going to initially be aimed at the books I'm reading in all of my free time (it actually stops being free surprisingly quickly), and also aimed at the Queste for Librarianshippe. No, I'm not trying to build a Grand Library Barge. Which would be pretty cool.
This Blog: books and libraries, with the occasional footnote on: cats, fiddles, moms, fall, cooking & food, bits of misplaced and unfunny humor, and my other sundry adventures. If you dun't like et, dun't read et. But do go read something, please.
Reading: Just finished Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett.
Next: On to Reaper Man (also by Terry Pratch), and then the Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.
